How to Get Started

New for 2021! You can now earn Live Well Rewards and donate them to a charity. Of course you can still redeem them for gift cards as in past years. Earn Live Well Rewards throughout the year for a variety of healthy activities.

In addition, if you complete the Health Assessment by November 15, 2020, you’ll earn $150 reduction in the cost of your Citi medical plan for 2021 if you’re an employee or spouse/partner who is enrolled in a Citi medical plan. Employees not enrolled in a Citi medical plan can still earn a $150 Live Well Reward by completing the Health Assessment.

All Citi employees, regardless of whether they are enrolled in a Citi medical plan and spouses/partners who are enrolled in a Citi medical plan can participate in healthy activities to accumulate Live Well Rewards points.

By completing healthy activities each quarter, you’ll accumulate Virgin Pulse Points to unlock four levels of Rewards—worth $70 each quarter—up to $280 a year! Plus, look out for instant Reward opportunities to earn and improve your health when you participate in the Global Fitness Challenge and more! In total, including instant rewards, you'll be able to earn over $300 in Live Well Rewards in 2021. Look for “How to Earn” under the Rewards tab in your Virgin Pulse account for a complete list.

Each quarter, you can earn:

Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4
Pulse Points 1,000 points 5,000 points 12,000 points 20,000 points Total Reward for the quarter:
Live Well Reward $10 $15 $20 $25 $70

Maximum Live Well Rewards per year can be $280 ($70 X 4 quarters) plus any instant awards available throughout the year.

Example:

  • If you reach Level 3 (12,000 points) in Q1, you will earn $45 in Rewards (Level 1 = $10 + Level 2 = $15 + Level 3 = $20; total of $45).
  • At the end of Q1, your points will reset and you will begin Q2 with 0 points.
  • If you reach Level 4 (20,000 points) in Q2 you will earn $70 in Rewards (Level 1 = $10 + Level 2 = $15 + Level 3 = $20 + Level 4 = $25; total of $70) on top of the $45 you earned in Q1.

Remember you can earn up to $70 in Rewards each quarter – that’s a maximum of $280 in Rewards each year.

iconHow do I redeem my Pulse Points for Gift Cards?

Go to the Rewards tab in your Virgin Pulse account and get a gift card or donate your earned Pulse Points to a charitable cause.

Important Notes Regarding Gift Cards & Charitable Donations

Live Well Rewards are considered taxable income and you’ll be taxed when you earn Rewards. To compensate for the tax, Citi will “gross up” or issue payments approximating any tax you’ll pay. You’ll receive a separate paycheck approximating the tax you will pay on the gift card Reward amount, which will be listed as “noncash GU.”

iconDo I need to request gift cards in certain amounts?

You can redeem your Live Well Rewards for gift cards at any time in the amounts made available by the merchants and retailers who offer them. Gift card values will vary by merchant and retailer and are subject to minimums. In addition, you may redeem your Rewards in separate gift cards with different merchants and retailers. Log in to your Virgin Pulse account, available through My Total Compensation and Benefits, to see the gift card options available to you.

iconAre there any restrictions on using the gift cards?

View the terms and conditions section below your card’s activation instructions to see any gift card restrictions. Generally, gift cards won’t expire and can be used at the selected merchant or retailer either online or in person by anyone in possession of the card, so keep them in a safe place until you use them.

iconHow long will it take to receive my gift cards after I request them?

Gift cards will be delivered electronically. In most cases, the gift card can be used immediately; however, for some retailers, gift cards may take one to two business days to be activated.

iconIs there any way to redeem my Live Well Rewards for cash?

No, but with the wide selection of gift cards available, we believe you’ll find one that works for you.

iconWhat if I discontinue my medical coverage during the course of the year and don’t receive my full Live Well Reward credit for completing the Live Well Health Assessment? Will I receive my balance in a gift card?

No. If you or your enrolled spouse/partner cancels your Citi medical coverage due to a qualified change in status or leaving Citi, you’ll forfeit any remaining Live Well credits earned through the Health Assessment.

In addition, if you and your spouse/partner both participate in the Live Well at Citi Program and you cancel your Citi medical coverage due to a qualified change in status and continue to work for Citi, you can continue to participate in the program as a Citi employee, but your spouse/partner can’t continue to participate.

iconAre gift cards taxable, and will I need to pay taxes?

Under the current U.S. Internal Revenue Code, gift cards are considered taxable income. However, to compensate for the tax, Citi will “gross up,” or issue payments approximating any tax you’ll pay. That way, you receive the full gift card amount.

Example: If you earned $100 in Live Well Rewards, Citi will add $25 to your paycheck to cover the estimated 25% federal supplemental tax rate you’ll pay on your gift card earnings. You’ll receive a separate paycheck approximating the tax you will pay on the gift card Reward amount, which will be listed as “noncash GU.”

Your Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement (“Form W-2”) will include the value of the gift card(s) earned and the related tax amount. If your spouse or partner receives a gift card, the value of his/her gift card(s) and the related tax amount will also be reported on your Form W-2.

iconWhen are gift cards taxed?

You’ll be taxed when you earn Live Well Rewards, not when you redeem or spend the gift card.

Example: You reach Level 1 in June and earn a $10 Live Well Reward. You redeem it for an Amazon gift card in August. You will be taxed in June.

iconIf I make a donation, will I receive a receipt?

After you make a donation, a receipt with the dollar amount donated will be sent to your preferred email address.

iconWill I see gift card values and related taxes on my paycheck or pay statement?

Yes. You’ll receive a separate paycheck for the amount of the Live Well Rewards you earn plus the related tax amount. The paycheck amount will be listed as “LIVEWELLGU.” If your spouse or partner receives a gift card, his/her Live Well Reward will also be included in your paycheck.

iconWhat if I’m leaving Citi and I have earned Live Well Rewards but haven’t redeemed them for gift cards yet?

You must be working at Citi to redeem Live Well Rewards for gift cards, so redeem your Live Well Rewards for gift cards before you terminate employment, if possible.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

iconWhat if I already completed the Live Well Health Assessment in the past?

Even if you completed the Health Assessment in the past, you must take it again each year between October 1 and November 15, to earn a $150 premium reduction (or $150 Live Well Reward if you are not enrolled in Citi medical benefits) for the following year.

iconCan new employees who join Citi or transfer from a Citi international business after September 28 take the Live Well Health Assessment and receive the $150 Live Well Reward?

New employees who join Citi or transfer from an international business or assignment after September 28 may take the Health Assessment, but they will not be able to earn the $150 Live Well Reward.

iconWhy can’t employees hired or transferred from an international business or assignment after September 28 earn a Live Well Reward for completing the Live Well Health Assessment?

New employees have 31 days to enroll in benefits. After they enroll, their eligibility information is sent electronically to Virgin Pulse to notify them that a new member is eligible for the program. Depending on when within the 31-day period the employee enrolls, there may not be enough time for him or her to access the Health Assessment and for Virgin Pulse to process the Live Well Reward in time for the following plan year.

iconCould my dependent children earn a Live Well Reward for completing the Live Well Health Assessment?

No. However, even though they aren’t eligible for Live Well Rewards, dependents who are over age 18 can take the Health Assessment and participate in other Live Well Healthy Activities.

iconCan I take the Live Well Health Assessment after November 15?

Yes. You and your spouse/partner who is enrolled in a Citi medical plan can still take the Health Assessment, though you will not receive the $150 Live Well Reward.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

iconWhat is the tobacco penalty, and will I be subject to it if I do not use tobacco products?

You and your enrolled spouse/partner will each pay a $600 annual penalty ($23 per pay period for 26 pay periods) on your medical coverage premiums if you attest to using tobacco products when you enroll in benefits and if you don’t complete the Tobacco Cessation program through Virgin Pulse by September 30, 2021. Please note that if you are tobacco free and you do not complete the Tobacco Free Attestation, you will still pay the tobacco penalty for you and your spouse/partner.

iconIf my spouse/partner or I complete the Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program in the middle of the plan year, can I stop paying the tobacco penalty before the next Annual Enrollment?

Yes. If you or your spouse/partner complete the program, you will stop paying the penalty as soon as administratively possible (within two pay cycles of program completion). Once the program is completed, you will receive a full refund of all penalty payments made during the 2021 plan year, if you complete the program by September 30, 2021.

iconWhat constitutes “completing” the Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program?

You or your spouse/partner must complete a minimum of four sessions with a tobacco cessation health coach if you are participating in health coaching. If you are participating in an online tobacco Journey, the program will be considered “completed” when you complete your Journey. In order to receive a full refund of all penalty payments made during the 2021 plan year, you have until September 30, 2021 to complete the Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program. Note: While becoming tobacco-free is the goal of these programs, it is not required in order to receive a full refund of your tobacco penalty payments.

iconWhich tobacco cessation Journey can I participate in to complete the Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program?

You or your spouse/partner can choose from any of the following Journeys to complete the Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program:

  • Consider Quitting
  • No Thanks, I Quit
  • Ready, Set, Stop Smoking
  • Prepare to Quit
iconDo I need to notify the Citi Benefits Center when I complete the Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program?

No. Once you complete the Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program, the Citi Benefits Center will receive confirmation from Virgin Pulse and will stop your penalty payments as soon as administratively possible, if it is completed by September 30, 2021.

iconIn completing the Tobacco Free Attestation, how do I know if I can consider myself a “non-user of tobacco”?

You are considered a non-user of tobacco if you have not used tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, pipes) or any tobacco products in the past six months. Tobacco products include e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, such as chewing tobacco and snuff. As such, you would not be deemed a non-user of tobacco until you have not used any tobacco products for six months.

iconWhy is Citi forcing employees and their spouses/partners to quit using tobacco products?

Citi is not forcing employees to stop using tobacco products. You are not required to stop using tobacco products. However, we take tobacco use and its harmful effects seriously, and tobacco use is a major driver of Citi’s increasing health care costs. This is the reason why our office locations across the globe are tobacco free. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that an employee who smokes costs 18% more than a nonsmoker. We must work together to control our health care costs and encourage good health.

iconIf employees are not enrolled in a Citi medical plan, are they eligible for the Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program?

Yes. The free Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program is open to all benefits-eligible Citi employees, even if they are not enrolled in a Citi medical plan.

iconI am not enrolled in a Citi medical plan. Am I subject to the tobacco penalty?

No. Only employees and their spouses/partners who are enrolled in a Citi medical plan are subject to the penalty.

iconIf I quit using tobacco products on my own instead of through the Live Well Tobacco Cessation Program, can I stop paying the penalty mid-year and have all my penalty payments refunded?

Yes. You must complete an affidavit that says you quit using tobacco products on your own and send it to the Citi Benefits Center. This form can be found on the Forms and Documents page on Citibenefits.com. You’ll receive a full refund of all penalty payments in the current year once the outside tobacco cessation program is completed by September 30, 2021.

iconI do not use tobacco products, but I did not complete the Tobacco Free Attestation when I enrolled in my benefits, and I am now paying the tobacco penalty. How can I stop paying the penalty?

Any employee who did not complete the Tobacco Free Attestation when he or she enrolled in benefits and who is enrolled in a Citi medical plan will begin paying the tobacco penalty as of January 1, 2021 or as soon as administratively possible after he or she enrolls in benefits and did not complete the tobacco-free attestation. In order to stop paying the penalty, you must call the Citi Benefits Center via ConnectOne at 1 (800) 881-3938. From the ConnectOne “benefits” menu, choose the “health and insurance benefits as well as TRIP and spending accounts” option. You can speak with a representative to discuss discontinuing the tobacco penalty from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

iconHow will I know if I am paying the tobacco penalty? What will it look like on my pay statement?

Your pay statement will not show the breakdown of your Live Well Rewards and/or penalties. It will show only the final cost of your medical coverage for a given pay period after any additions or subtractions. You can view these details and find out whether you are paying the tobacco penalty by visiting Your Benefits Resources™ (YBR), available through My Total Compensation and Benefits.

Sign in using your Single Sign-On password. Under "Want to Get to Our Best In Class Vendors Fast?" click on "Health and Insurance (YBR)." Next click on “View Your Coverage Costs.” This page will show all your medical plan costs as well as any penalties and/or incentives you are receiving. In addition, your confirmation of benefits enrollment (which will be mailed to your address on record after the Annual Enrollment period) will indicate if you are paying the tobacco penalty.
