Burned out? You’re not alone.

In a recent survey, more than one-third of workers said they were feeling more burned out by their jobs compared to a year ago. This is no surprise to the millions of employees facing the stress, isolation, and increased demands of working during a pandemic. Here are some additional concerning statistics:

  • Nearly 70% of people who transitioned to remote work in 2020 said they work on the weekend.
  • 45% of those working remotely said they regularly work more than eight hours a day.
  • Nearly 40% of employees said they put off their summer vacation plans.
  • Among the 76% of employees who participate in virtual meetings, 38% said they are tired of them and 24% find them exhausting.

If you’re feeling disconnected, fatigued, or overwhelmed, there are steps you can take to repair and protect your mental and emotional well-being.

  • Have a chat – Make a point of calling coworkers that you don’t get to socialize with anymore and have casual, nonwork-related conversations throughout the week.
  • Set a schedule – If you’re working from home, it’s easy to let work overlap into personal and family time. Set defined “working hours,” and then shut down for the day at a designated time.
  • Take time off – Even if you can’t travel, it’s still important to take vacation time. Plan a project at home or start a new hobby. Complete a challenging jigsaw puzzle, read a novel, or try out a different type of exercise — anything that allows you to truly feel you had a break from work.
  • Reach out – Many companies offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) with free, confidential, 24/7 access to trained representatives who can listen, offer support, and guide you to helpful resources.
  • Take care of yourself – Simple things like getting enough sleep, exercising daily, and eating healthy food really do make a big difference in how you feel — physically and emotionally.
